Warrior Don is a tribute post for my cousin Donald G. Denwiddie who passed away on May 12, 2025 after a long battle with cancer. As it turns out, in true warrior spirit, Don fought a lot longer than I knew. Yet throughout his battles, he regularly showed up with his trademark smile, making everyone laugh and feel loved. Now his suffering is over. He’s free.

Reconnection

We reconnected as adults and discovered a shared interest in various “different” topics. Don was interested in my Energy work explorations, and he introduced me to Carlos Castenada. We often had intriguing conversations. Don encouraged me with my writing projects including my poetry, my various collaborative contributions, and my blog. Recently I realized that we both entered the military during the same year. Don began his US Air Force stint in January, while I started my Active Duty enlistment with the US Army in June.

Family

A strong work ethic is a family trait and Don worked very hard during his career. However more than anything, Don always showed up. Birthday celebrations, weddings, or just because. I remember traveling to Virginia to attend my cousin Damien’s wedding, and there was Don. For happy family occasions he would always say “And it’s not a funeral!” 🙂 Back then, we were both having similar challenges at work, and we received helpful advice from the Wise Ones (Uncle Melvin, Aunt VirDella and Sandra). Don served as the Family Historian for a long time. He has now passed the torch to his baby brother Morris (aka BB).

Hidden Gifts

Well… not necessarily hidden gifts. Towards the end of his life I discovered that Don had some gifts and loves that I never knew about. He played the guitar and the trumpet. He painted artwork, and even wrote songs! One of Don’s favorite places was Tybee Island in Georgia. In time I am sure I will make my way there to discover and explore. Hey Don, maybe you’ll see me there when I go. 😉 Rest easy cuz!
